About Holy Unexpected

Eight freestanding portraits form a passage through history.

Holy Unexpected explores the lives of eight remarkable people through paired, contemporary illustrated panels. Each portrait stands beside a densely worked field of biography, quotation and symbol.

The figures lived in particular times and faced particular dramas: political violence, doubt, illness, institutional resistance, displacement and radical changes of direction. Their stories reveal how grace can work through the unresolved and unforeseen.

At the heart of the exhibition is the film Holy Unexpected, a dialogue between Julian of Norwich and G. K. Chesterton. These unlikely friends guide visitors through the story of Christianity in these lands and the lives gathered around them.
